Cafe Yolk is a brunch cafe in Reading that’s so popular that customers say there’s always a queue. On Tripadvisor, one customer said that they had to wait 20 minutes before they were seated but explained that the food is entirely “worth the wait”.
The reason why there’s always a queue at Cafe Yolk is that it functions as a walk-in-only, meaning that reservations aren’t taken and people are served on a first-come, first-serve basis. The cafe was first opened in 2013 and since then it’s become a staple for those who live in east Reading.
In its time as a food establishment, Cafe Yolk has won a couple of awards and was named southeast cafe of the year at the 2016 Food Awards. The cafe also has a four-and-a-half star rating on Tripadvisor with plenty of “excellent” reviews.
The cafe serves an amazing variety of food: from Turkish eggs to Canadian-style breakfasts, the eatery suits the needs of any and everyone who visits. The cafe is mainly focused on serving brunch and offers up avocado toast with the addition of salmon, bacon, and chorizo.
There are also different varieties of eggs benedict that can be ordered. Classic smoked ham, smoked salmon, Californian (avocado and tomatoes), or chorizo and avocado. For those who are a little bit more adventurous, you can also order a Montecristo which is ham and cheese French toast with a side of maple syrup and potatoes.
A traditional full English is also on the menu and costs £10.50. The Canadian version comes with the normal lashings of sausages, bacon, and eggs alongside two pancakes with maple syrup and fruit. Other funky additions to the menu include vegan tacos, breakfast burgers, Mexican brunch, and pancakes.
Customers at the cafe rave about its pancakes and have noticed that often you have to queue before you’re seated. That being said, one customer said that the food was definitely “worth the wait”.
Vee600 from Essex said: “We went there for breakfast… service great, they accommodated so well. There was a queue, I wondered why and thought “this place must be good!” .. it definitely was! Worth the wait literally. Staff were just so lovely and had great vibes! Take a trip there if you’re ever in Reading!”
NaomiandTim from Woodley wrote: “This was our fourth visit to Yolk but first since the dreaded Covid. The cafe has extended quite a lot in size which looks really good. Clearly popular as ever, we went last Sunday and had to queue for about 20 minutes but it was worth the wait.
“I had the ‘Canadian’ breakfast which was really good, pancakes were a little cold but still a great taste and the best around. My wife was very disappointed that her favourite (caramelised apple pancakes) had been removed from the menu so she had the Huevos Rancheros instead.
“They were happy to swap out the tofu for scrambled egg and she was really pleased with the dish, great flavour with a good chilli kick. The milkshakes are great too. Would have scored a 5 if the food had been hotter and the caramelised pancakes were still on the menu!”
