Former Reading China Palace could become new Doner and Gyros takeaway

A long-empty former Chinese restaurant could be revamped into a new kebab takeaway after plans were submitted to convert the unit.

Plans have been submitted which, if approved, would see the former China Palace in the Broad Street Mall converted into a new Doner & Gyros takeaway.

The restaurant closed in 2017 after receiving a massive fine for employing a number of illegal workers.

A later application to reopen as an “upmarket bar” was also refused.

The units have been empty since then, but now could be brought back into use.

The company has three restaurants across America in Richmond, Texas and Orlando, as well as Montclair in Canada.

It has also branched into the UK, with restaurants opening in Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire and in Canary Wharf in London.

There is very little information in the current application submitted to Reading Borough Council, but the council is likely to make a decision on the submission in the near future.

If it is successful, the application will follow other American brands like Taco Bell, Wendy’s, Jollibee and Wingstop as American fast food outlets choosing to set up in Reading.
