Reading and Berkshire news: Five stories you may have missed today

It has been another busy day in the BerkshireLive newsroom today (Monday, October 18).

Reading flat owners’ homes invaded with ‘disgusting’ smell of poo

People living in a block of flats have had to live with the “disgusting smell of sewage” seeping into their homes after an elderly lady’s garden was flooded.

Maureen King, who lives in West Green Court in Coley contacted BerkshireLive after more than a week of “our houses smelling like s***”.

She said the leak had flooded the garden of a 90-year-old woman living in the flats, which left her unable to go outside because of the smell.

Man says Windsor UFO ‘turned my bedroom orange’

A man has revealed he saw an “absolutely massive spinning dome” in the skies about his road in Windsor that “turned my bedroom orange”.

David Sturgess is now aged 66, but still remembers the extraordinary moment he witnessed when was aged around eight in the mid 1960s.

David and his family were living in Stuarts Way, Windsor, at the time.

He was in his childhood bedroom when suddenly it turned orange.

He thought it was a nearby old-fashioned streetlight, which would glow orange as they warmed up. But the street lights were not on.

Most popular baby names in every Berkshire area in 2020

The most popular baby names in Berkshire in 2020 have been revealed with some of the most favoured including; Muhammad, Olivia, and Arthur.

Muhammad – which was the most popular name for boys in Reading and Slough – was also one of the top names in four regions of England, and Arthur was top in three regions.

According to the Office for National Statistics, the name Oliver has remained the most popular name for boys in England and Wales for the eight-year in a row.

Kate Winslet helped Strictly’s Greg Wise realise that Emma Thompson was the one for him

Strictly Come Dancing star Greg Wise married actress Emma Thompson in 2003 but their relationship might not have occurred without the influence of Kate Winslet.

Greg, Emma, and Reading -born actress Kate all starred in the 1995 film Sense and Sensibility and at the time Emma was married to Shakespearean actor, Kenneth Branagh.

Whilst on the Graham Norton show Emma explained how she and Greg ended up together.

She said: “Before he did the job, he went to see a friend of his who was a bit witchy and she said he would meet his future partner on the film.”

Shinfield Studios development shown from high above in spectacular drone footage

Drone footage shows the massive scale of the two huge film studios where Hollywood blockbusters and Netflix and Amazon super-series will soon be shot.

Photographer Tony McGinn sent his drone into the skies above the studios, which are part of the Thames Valley Science Park in Shinfield.

The studios at the park are nearly finished and total more than 20,000 sq ft.

Scenes for Hollywood films and multi-million shows on Amazon and Netflix will be shot at the site in Berkshire.
