Reading chicken wing vendor at Blue Collar Corner scoops people’s choice award for new wing flavour

A chicken wing business famed for its sticky, hot buffalo wings has scooped a prestigious award. Gurt Wings won two accolades over the weekend at Wing Fest London 2022.

The business has a permanent stall based at Blue Collar Corner which is a food hall located just behind Broad Street Mall in Reading town centre. The team at Gurt Wings has said that it’s “amazing” to have won two awards and mentioned that their staff “worked their butt offs” during what was an incredibly hot weekend.

Wing Fest is described as the “ultimate chicken wing showdown” and sees droves of chicken wing vendors descend to give the people a taste of some chicken wing goodness. There are four awards that are handed out at Wing Fest; Best Buffalo Wing People’s Choice Award, Best Wild Wing People’s Choice Award, Best Buffalo Wing Judge’s Choice Award, and Best Wild Wing Judge’s Choice Award.

Wing Fest UK crowned Gurt Wings first place for Best Buffalo Peoples Choice Award as well as first place for Best Wild Wing People’s Choice Award. In second place in each of these categories was Wingman’s followed by Mexican Seoul.

James Mitchell, owner of Gurt Wings, said: “It feels amazing to have won the People’s Choice vote for both our Buffalo Wing and Wild Wing at Wing Fest London, we have been doing Wing Fest since 2018 and won a fair few awards along the way but to get the Peoples Choice vote for both Wings was an amazing feeling!

“The staff worked their butts off for this, standing over fryers in 35’c heat is no fun for nine hours per day cooking 8,000 wings but they got the job done and we won! We cannot thank everyone enough who voted for us and has supported us!

“Find us at Blue Collar Corner in Reading Thursday to Sunday every week and we will be releasing the Wild Wing next week for everyone to try for a week before we hold onto it again until Wing Fest Bristol in September.”
