The Food Awards England 2022 Finals will be taking place in June and a list of finalists has been released – including three cafes in Reading. The Food Awards looks to give out accolades to restaurants, chefs, cafes, specialists, and suppliers.
The event will be taking place in Manchester and will welcome in top professionals from all sectors of the food industry. In the category café/bistro of the year, plenty of eateries have been nominated across the country.
A The Food Awards England spokesperson said: “England offers a wide range of places that serve world cuisines. The finalists were voted for by the public for providing authentic recipes and unique dishes to their diners, creating memorable experiences for both residents and visitors.
“Undoubtedly, there are some amazing specialists around the country, who know how to offer great service, delicious food and meet the expectations of their diners. These are the professionals that we aim to reward at The Food Awards England 2022.
“We would like to wish all the finalists the best of luck and we can’t wait to welcome all our guests and celebrate the winners with them.”

Cafe Yolk is situated in the student area of Reading on Erleigh Road. It opened its doors in 2013 and is well-known for its varied breakfast offerings.
As a French-Candian-inspired eatery, the café offers a variety of sweet and savoury breakfasts including a ‘Canadian’ style breakfast with eggs, bacon, sausage, mushrooms, beans, potatoes, pancakes, maple syrup, and a side of fruit.
Perhaps due to its popularity, the café is walk-in only and serves customers from Monday to Sunday 8am to 4pm.
The Switch is another brunch-style café and is located in Tilehurst at 19 The Triangle. The café is pretty new to the area and opened its doors to customers for the first time in September 2021.
Some of its offerings include chorizo duck eggs on sourdough and the switch tomato tapenade which is made up of slow-roasted heritage tomatoes, tomato tapenade and a poached egg served on sourdough bread with parmesan crisps and crispy onions.
The café is open 8am to 4pm from Monday to Friday, 9am to 4pm on Saturdays and 8am to 3pm on Sundays.
Picnic Foods sits in the heart of Reading town centre at 5 Market Place. Its Instagram explains that the shop is “an independently run, locally sourced, ethical café in the heart of Reading UK, who has an enormous obsession with food.”
Each week the café serves up two different types of salad boxes alongside toasties, soup, and plenty of different cakes. Customers love the shop for its coffee as well.
On TripAdvisor a customer called MariaRose_ said that the café makes “perfect coffee every time” mentioning that “the carrot cake is also to die for.” Picnic Foods is open every day from 7am to 4pm apart from on Sundays when it opens at 9:30am.
